Vascular Access Device Options (VAD)

Administering drug treatments or nutrition directly into veins is a tried and trusted technique. Patients are treated by this route for a number of reasons:

  • the treatments work more effectively or quickly when delivered intravenously.
  • sometimes the treatments have to be given frequently, or in large doses.
  • the patient is too unwell to be able to take treatment by mouth.
  • if the course of treatment is long term, e.g. some cancer treatments, it can be more convenient to use a single device to deliver the therapy.

Today there is a wider choice of vascular access devices available that suit both the medical and social needs of patients and healthcare professionals.
